Lifesaving Partnerships

Soon after entering Chandler-Gilbert Community College’s (CGCC) Mortuary Science Program, students realize the purpose of their role in funeral service is to honor a life that was lived and to support those left behind by a loss. An important element of this role is for a funeral service professional to support families and individuals who have chosen to give the gift of life and improvement of life after a passing.

For more than two decades, Donor Network of Arizona (DNA) has built a strong connection with the CGCC Mortuary Science Program (formerly known as Mesa Community College’s Mortuary Science program) to provide students with an education that arms them with the knowledge to support families of donors. CGCC’s Mortuary Science Program students recently had the chance to visit DNA’s Tempe facility.

The CGCC MSP students had a full day of enriching learning opportunities, including a comprehensive background on the history, mission and daily operations of DNA. The mortuary students were also given a tour of DNA’s Tempe location as part of this invaluable experience. What the students found to be the most impactful was hearing the inspiring stories surrounding actual cases of connections between the donor’s and their families who have chosen to give their gifts, as well as the individuals and families whose quality of life was drastically improved.

As a result of this incredible opportunity, these soon-to-be funeral professionals will begin their careers with a greater understanding and compassion for the families of donors that they serve. The teams from both DNA and the CGCC Mortuary Science Program look forward to continuing an amazing partnership for many years to come as they both work towards a shared goal of honoring the lives of Arizona organ, eye and tissue donor heroes.
