Funeral Services Rules Are in Effect: Review Your Policies and Procedures

Arizona’s updated Funeral Services Licensing rules are now in effect. The Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS) encourages all licensees to review the requirements and ensure their operations comply.

The rules are available in Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) Title 9, Chapter 9, Subchapter 9B.

Review Your Written Policies and Procedures

Under the updated rules, funeral establishments and crematories must maintain written policies and procedures addressing areas including staff qualifications, safety, handling of remains and consumer protections.

Now is a good time to review your existing documents, identify needed updates and make sure your written procedures reflect how your establishment operates.

AFCCA Resources for Members

To help members with this work, AFCCA has developed Funeral Establishment and Crematory policy and procedure templates, available through the Member Compliance Center.

These templates provide a starting point. Members should customize them to their operations and review them against the applicable rules. Using a template does not replace the licensee’s responsibility to meet Department requirements.

AFCCA is sharing this reminder to help members access the rules and practical resources for updating their policies and procedures.
